Collectors of lichens of Sierra Leone
Version 1 December 2017

  1. Afzelius, Adam (1750 - 1837): - Tibell (1999: 63) writes "Afzelius, one of the apostles of Linné, travelled and collected first in England and Scotland, and was then posted as a botanist in Freetown, Sierra Leone. He arrived to Freetown in 1791, but had to go back to London in 1793. In 1794 a French fleet attacked Freetown and Afzelius' collections were destroyed. He went back to Freetown and started collecting again, and brought rich collections with him back to Europe in 1796.
Afzelius collected lichens in Sierra Leone and Guinea, eight of which were described in 'Methodus' by Acharius. Two species were later published in his 'Lichenographia universalis' and 'Synopsis', respectively. Examples of these often widely distributed tropical lichens are: Physma byrsaeum (Ach.) Tuck., Pyrenula aspistea (Ach.) Ach., and Trypethelium mastoideum Ach. Acharius also described Lecanactis premnea (Ach.) Arnold from English material collected by Afzelius. There are several lichens collected by Afzelius from England in the Thunberg herbarium in Uppsala. Acharius (1814) honored Afzelius by naming a species from Sierra Leone Graphis afzelii. - SBL3 1: 219 - 222. Lichen collections are kept in S, SBT, UPS".
