[RLL List # 228 / Rec.# 34063] Keywords: PLATISMATIA WHEELERI/ PLATISMATIA GLAUCA/ DISTRIBUTION/ PARMELIACEAE/ HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS Abstract: Platismatia wheeleri was recently described as a species distinct from the highly morphologically variable Platismatia glauca. Previously, P. wheeleri was known only from intermountain western North America in southern British Columbia, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. After examining collections from the New York Botanical Garden and Arizona State University herbaria we discovered that P. wheeleri was collected in southern California and the Tatra Mountains of Slovakia. The morphology, ecology and biogeography of P. wheeleri are discussed, and the importance and utility of historical collections is highlighted. This article is intended to alert researchers to the potential presence of P. wheeleri in different regions of the world so we can better understand its historical and current distribution and abundance. – doi:10.2509/naf2012.007.010 URL: http://dx.doi.org/10.2509/naf2012.007.010 [E-mail correction] [Upload PDF/URL]

Lichens and mosses are essential biocrust components and provide a variety of ecosystem services, making their conservation and management of interest. Accordingly, understanding what factors are correlated with their distribution is important to land managers. We hypothesized that cover would be related to geologic and pedologic factors. We sampled 32 sites throughout the eastern Mojave Desert, stratifying by parent material and the age of the geomorphic surfaces. The cover of lichens and mosses on 'available ground' (L+Mav; available ground excludes ground covered by rocks or plant stems) was higher on limestone and quartzite-derived soils than granite-derived soils. Cover was also higher on moderately younger-aged geomorphic surfaces (Qya2, Qya3, Qya4) and cutbanks than on very young (Qya1), older-aged surfaces (Qia1, Qia2), or soils associated with coppice mounds or animal burrowing under Larrea tridentata. When all sites and parent materials were combined, soil texture was the most important factor predicting the occurrence of L+Mav, with cover positively associated with higher silt, very fine sand, and fine sand fractions and negatively associated with the very coarse sand fraction. When parent materials were examined separately, nutrients such as available potassium, iron, and calcium became the most important predictors of L+Mav cover. © 2014. [RLL List # 235 / Rec.# 35527] Keywords: CRITICAL LOAD/ HEAVY METALS/ ISOTOPIC SIGNATURE/ LETHARIA VULPINA/ NITROGEN/ TRAFFIC POLLUTION Abstract: To assess the impact of vehicular emissions on a mixed conifer forest, we measured the contents of the trace elements, N, C, and their respective natural isotopes (?15N and ?13C), in the epiphytic lichen, L. vulpina. The samples were collected along transects perpendicular to Interstate 80 (I-80) and along a more remote, secondary forest road (R07). Distance to the road verge, trunk cover, and stand basal area were also recorded. Percent N ranged from 1.10% to 2.00% near I-80 and from 0.78% to 1.13% along R07. Concentrations of N, 15N, Na, As, Pb, and Zn were enhanced in lichen samples near I-80 and were negatively correlated with distance from the road. Trunk cover values differed between roads (p<0.001) and were negatively correlated with %N (r2=0.74; p<0.001). The results indicate that vehicular N emissions are significant enough to alter the surrounding ecosystem, modifying the presence of a sensitive component such as L. vulpina, and suggest that a clean-site threshold of 1.0%N may be too high as an indicator of critical N load exceedance. The study also underscored the potential role of wolf lichen in a large-scale assessment of N deposition and source identification. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. [RLL List # 235 / Rec.# 35484] Keywords: BIODIVERSITY/ LICHENS/ MEXICO Abstract: Mexican lichen species richness is not known with certainty. It is estimated, for example, that 3 600 species could occur only on its tropical parts, which is half of the total estimated for the Neotropics. Considering Mexico's climate and non-tropical vegetation diversity, the number of lichen species, as some authors estimate, may reach 5 000. Therefore, the country would be only second to Brazil (4 900 lichen species in its tropical parts) among the Neotropical countries and it could harbor between 18-37% of the 13 500 to 20 000 estimated species worldwide. We consider that only near 50% of the Mexican lichen species have been recorded. The goal is to present an updated account of the known lichen species for Mexico. Herein, 2 722 species and 111 infraspecific categories grouped in 2 divisions, 2 subdivisions, 6 classes, 21 orders, 84 families, and 64 genera are recorded. Ninety percent of the species are chlorolichens and the remaining 10% cyanolichens. Crustose lichens are the most frequent growth form (62%), followed by foliose (28%), and fruticose forms (11%). The most common substrate is bark (46%), followed by rocks (34%), leaves (11%) and soil (10%). Temperate forest is the species richest type of vegetation (947 species), followed by xerophytic scrubland (544), tropical humid forest (391), seasonal dry forest (386) and humid mountain forest (230). The states with higher number of lichen species are Baja California (710), Veracruz (700), Sonora (518), Chihuahua (515) and Baja California Sur (511), and those with less species are Campeche (17), Aguascalientes (2) and Tabasco (1). However, these figures reflect more the disparity in the number of studies conducted in each state than real differences in lichen diversity among states. [RLL List # 225 / Rec.# 33318] Abstract: The lichen species Verrucaria tavaresiae is associated with Petroderma maculiforme, an unusual photobiont belonging to the brown algae. This marine ascomycete has so far been found only on the coast of Central California, although its photobiont has a much broader geographical distribution. Morphological and ecological characters have led a previous author to attribute this marine fungus to Verrucaria, a genus including other species colonizing the intertidal zone of rocky seashores. Phylogenetic inferences from two nuclear and one mitochondrial loci confirm the placement of Verrucaria tavaresiae within the lichen family Verrucariaceae and more specifically within the marine genus Wahlenbergiella. The new combination Wahlenbergiella tavaresiae (R.L. Moe) Gueidan, Thüs & Pérez-Ortega is therefore proposed here. – doi:doi: 10.1639/0007-2745-114.3.563 Notes: New combination: Wahlenbergiella tavaresiae (R.L. [RLL List # 224 / Rec.# 33232] Keywords: ALIEN GRASSES/ BIOLOGICAL SOIL CRUST/ EXOTIC PLANT INVASION/ GERMINATION/ MEDITERRANEAN SHRUBLANDS/ SAGE SCRUB Abstract: Biological soil crusts (BSCs) are comprised of soil particles, bacteria, cyanobacteria, green algae, microfungi, lichens, and bryophytes and confer many ecosystem services in arid and semiarid ecosystems worldwide, including the highly threatened California sage scrub (CSS). These services, which include stabilizing the soil surface, can be adversely affected when BSCs are disturbed. Using field and greenhouse experiments, we tested the hypothesis that mechanical disturbance of BSC increases emergence of exotic vascular plants in a coastal CSS ecosystem. At Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park in southern California, 22 plots were established and emergence of exotic and native plants was compared between disturbed and undisturbed subplots containing BSC. In a separate germination study, seed fate in disturbed BSC cores was compared to seed fate in undisturbed BSC cores for three exotic and three native species. In the field, disturbed BSCs had significantly (>3×) greater exotic plant emergence than in undisturbed BSC, particularly for annual grasses. Native species, however, showed no difference in emergence between disturbed and undisturbed BSC. Within the disturbed treatment, emergence of native plants was significantly, and three times less than that of exotic plants. In the germination study, seed fates for all species were significantly different between disturbed and undisturbed BSC cores. Exotic species had greater emergence in disturbed BSC, whereas native plants showed either no response or a positive response. This study demonstrates another critical ecosystem service of BSCs-the inhibition of exotic plant species-and underscores the importance of BSC conservation in this biodiversity hotspot and possibly in other aridland ecosystems. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V. – doi: 10.1007/s11258-011-9943-x URL: http://www.scopus.com/inward/record.url?eid=2-s2.0-80052868781&partnerID=40&md5=788df0716e3d995dcfbaf3abafa3961d [E-mail correction] [Upload PDF/URL] Hernandez, R. [RLL List # 226 / Rec.# 33676] Keywords: CALIFORNIA SAGE SCRUB/ CHAPARRAL/ LICHENS/ MEDITERRANEAN/ MOSSES/ SHRUBLAND Abstract: Understanding the biodiversity of functionally important communities in Earth's ecosystems is vital in the apportionment of limited ecosystem management funds and efforts. In southern California shrublands, which lie in a global biodiversity hotspot, biological soil crusts (BSCs) confer critical ecosystem services; however, their biodiversity remains unknown. In this study, six sites (n = 4 each, 25 m2) were established along a mediterranean shrubland environmental gradient in southern California. Here, the biodiversity of all BSC-forming lichens and bryophytes was evaluated, related to environmental traits along the gradient, and compared to species richness among North American ecosystems supporting BSCs (data from previous studies). In total, 59 BSC-forming lichens and bryophytes were observed, including the very rare Sarcogyne crustacea, a rare moss, and five endemic lichen species. Over half (61%) of the species observed were found at a single site. Along the gradient, species evenness of late-successional BSC was related to dew point and elevation, and both evenness and richness were related to distance to coast. Using an ordination analysis, five distinct late-successional BSC communities were identified: Riversidian, Spike moss, Casperian, Alisian, and Lagunian. Twenty-five lichens and 19 bryophytes are newly reported for North American BSC-forming organisms, now comprising ~1/2 of the North American total. BSCs in North American hot and cold deserts were approximately 4. 0 and 2. 4 times less species rich than BSCs found in southern California shrublands, respectively. Given the anthropogenic impacts on quality and distribution of California mediterranean shrublands, our results show that these sites represent important refugia of BSC species in this globally important region. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media B.V. – doi:10.1007/s10531-012-0236-z URL: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10531-012-0236-z [E-mail correction] [Upload PDF/URL]
