The lists in this collection are accessible by clickable maps. They are exclusively based on the evaluation of literature. Each checklist is accompanied by a list of the evaluated publications and a list with the names of collectors citing the herbaria where their material is deposited. In some cases there are pages presenting a text on the biodiversity, informing about the collecting delimitations or offering an identification key.

There are continuously updated checklists of 193 states and 419 additional geographical subunits. These are states, provinces and islands. There are no compiled lists of the countries, when lists of smaller units are available e.g. for the USA and Canada. There are exeptions from this rule, when records can not be traced to the smaller units. In these cases the checklists of the countries contain only these unspecified records. There is even a global list with unspecified records necessary, as some authors, e.g. Acharius described species without giving any type location.

It is planned to use these data for various kind of biodiversity analyses. This means calculations of similarities between different geographical units as well as correlations between geographical and morphological, anatomical, chemical and ecological data. The analyses will be conducted as soon as the quality and completeness of the data is sufficient. A first evaluation on a special aspect has been published in January 2007. The data in this database are © copyright T. Feuerer and A. Thell. Permission is granted for free use of data of single geopolitical units for non-commercial purposes, any commercial use or the use of a larger set of units must be by prior written agreement. When using the data of a single geopolitical unit, our project should be cited.

There is a compilated list of all evaluated publications. A global checklist in cooperation with Index Fungorum is under construction.

The global checklist presented here is procuced by merging the checklists of all 193 countries, as well as the lists of states, departments and territories of larger countries, all together 640 lists of geopolitical units. The national lists contain the word "type" when the type locality is situated in that country. For some species there is no information about their type localities. They are listed here.
