Ecology: Whereas the the ecology of this species is characterised as "on nutrient poor limestone and mortar in shaded and moist habitats" (Thor 1988: 69 as Aspicilia excavata), mapping data in Munich and Hamburg draw a different picture. There, the species is growing on vertical concrete walls more common in the cities than in the country. The same picture is drawn by Cezanne et al. (2008: 58) "Aspicilia moenium besiedelt bevorzugt Vertikalflächen von Betonmauern in zumeist lichtoffener Lage (insbesondere in Südexposition), wo ihre Einzellager zu mehr oder minder großen, bereits ohne Lupe erkennbaren Gruppen zusammentreten".
