"Thallus small to large, 3-27 cm broad. Upper surface yellow, yellowish, tan, often mottled or edged in black, uniformly tan in old herbarium specimens; pseudocyphellate and nonisidiate or nonpseudocyphellate and isidiate; without marginal ciliae. Lower surface jet black, the margins brown, without rhizines throughout. Upper cortex 16-26 µ thick, prosoplectenchymatous, white or pigmented with purple or lavender in moribund parts near the lower cortex; lower ..." (Culberson & Culberson 1965: 182).
