Asterothyrium pittieri Müll. Arg.

Thallus white, smooth, nitid, round, ca. 1 - 4 mm in diameter, bearing usually one or sometimes several apothecia. Apothecia up to 1 mm in diameter, immersed in thallus at first, then erumpent, and later somewhat prominent, round, disc badious, nitid; margins formed mainly by the ragged, irregular lobes of the ruptured tissue originally covering the apothecia like the top of a pomegranate. Paraphyses simple, non-septate. Asci oval to ovoid, 2-spored, 90 - 99 x 27 - 36 µm. Spores hyaline, 1-septate, ellipsoid with round ends, 50 - 61 x 22.5 - 24 µm (Wei & Jiang 1991: 205).
