Thallus: effuse, several cm diam., endoxylic or with dark grey areoles. Apothecia lecanorine, sessile, numerous, generally scattered, but crowded in central parts of thallus, up to 1.2 mm diam. Disc flat to slightly convex, daek brownich orange. Margin thick, up to 100 µm, initially regular, later carved or folded, initially very prominent, later more level with disc, colour bright orange, eventually more brownish, always contrasting to the more brown colour of the disc, more or less shining. Lower surface of the margin always more yellowish. Amphithecium well-developed, with many algae. Medulla with rather loose thick-walled hyphae. Cortex poorly developed, up to 20 µm, consisting of anticlinal elongated hyphae. The part closest to the parathecium with yellow inspersed epipsamma. Parathecium of parallel, narrow hyphae with elongated, glutinized cells in much gelatine, broadly fan-shaped, with anticlinal hyphae of elongate cells extending to the surface. Exterior 15 µm easily separating in anticlinal hyphae when squashed and inspersed with yellow epipsamma. Hypothecium 30-40 µm, consisting of intricately interwoven hyphae with oil droplets. Hymenium 60µm with fine epipsamma. Paraphyses loose, simple or apically slightly branched, hardly inflared, up to 2.5 µm. Ascospores: Asci with 8 spores. Spores 14.5-16 x 5-6 µm. Septum 2.5-3 µm, closing rather late (Søchting 1989, p. 250).
