Type locality: Australia. South Australia: 7 km W of Ardrossan along the Maitland road, Yorke Peninsula, 34°25'S 137°49'E, on Melaleuca trees in mallee scrub, 30.8.1977, J.A. Elix 3711 (CANB 9507688-holotype, dupl. HO not seen).

Thallus: forming rosettes 4-5 cm wide, with numerous brownish-orange apothecia covering most of the central part, surrounded by a bright yellow or yellowish-orange marginal zone without apothecia. The central portion with a whitish- or greyish-yellow, ± even surface between the apothecia. The peripheral portion yellow, with poorly developed, imbricate lobes 1.5-3.0 mm wide and rather short to 2(-4) mm long. Apothecia 0.4-1 mm diam., lecanorine at first, but becoming biatorine, raised, flat then convex and emarginate with age; true exciple 30-70 µm thick in the uppermost lateral portion, 10-15 µm thick in the lower lateral portion; cortex of the thalline exciple to 30 µm thick, of large, thin-walled cells, 8-13 x 5-9 µm. Hymenium to 50 µm high; subhymenium very thin, 10-15 µm thick; paraphyses expanding towards the tips to 3-5(-6) µm wide, uppermost cells with oil droplets and 'oil cells' present; Ascospores 9-12(-13) x (4.5)5-6(-7) µm, with narrow septa, 2-4(-5) µm wide. Chemistry: No lichen substances. (Thell et al. 2009: 207-282).

Ecology: X. yorkensis is confined to bark of Melaleuca trees.
