Cetraria islandica (L.) Ach.

Methodus, Sectio post. (Stockholmiæ): 292 (1803).

Basionym: Lichen islandicus L., Sp. pl. 2: 1145 (1753).

Thallus: Data lacking.

Photobiont: Data lacking.

Chemistry: xxx (Krog 1968: xx). Protolichesterinic acid and two unidentified substances, probably also fatty acids in rather low concentration in some. Neither of the two unidentified substances is rangiformic acid, which has been reported in both P- and P+ strains of Cetraria islandica from Alaska. With or without fumarprotocetraric acid (Kristinsson 1969: 347). P+ redorange, fumarprotocetraric acid, lichesterinic acid (only dedectable by HPLC), protocetraric acid minor (only dedectable by HPLC) (Paus 1993: 587 for Northern Germany). Protolichesterinic acid minor (Kärnefelt 1979 for xxx). "In the literature usnic acid has been quoted as being present in Cetraria islandica. We have never come across usnic acid, even in trace amounts" (Ingolfsdottir 2002: 730). Methyl protolichesterinate (Huneck & Yoshimura 1996: 140). (+)-Lichesterylic acid (Asahina & Shibata 1954, Solberg 1986, Huneck & Yoshimura 1996: 147). (+)-Protolichestinic acid [in contrary to Cetraria aculeata which contains (-)-Protolichestinic acid] (Huneck & Yoshimura 1996: 152).
Race I: Medulla P+, Protolichesterinic acid and two unidentified substances, fumarprotocetraric acid (Kristinsson 1969: 347). "Protolichesterinic acid, fumarprotocetraric acid in the medulla (Reutimann & Scheidegger 1987: 364).
Race II: Medulla P-, Protolichesterinic acid and two unidentified substances (Kristinsson 1969: 347).
