Type locality: Germany, Thuringia, Landkreis Nordhausen, Nordhausen, Wallroth's plate 261, 4430/4 (STR - lectotype; photograph of part in Arnold, Lich. Exsicc. 1348 (G, H, M, STR, UPS). Designated by Ruoss & Ahti (1985).

There are two subspecies:
Cladonia arbuscula subsp. squarrosa (Wallr.) Ruoss, Bot. Helv. 97: 260 (1987). Basionym: Patellaria coccinea var. squarrosa Wallr., Naturgesch. Säulchen-Flecht.: 191 (1829).
Type locality: Germany, Harz Mts., Brocken, F. W. Wallroth s.n. (STR - lectotype). Lectotypification by Ruoss & Ahti 1985).
Cladonia arbuscula subsp. stictica Ruoss, Lichenologist 21: 37 (1989).
Type locality: New Zealand, Otago, Mt. Maungatua, 1935, J. S. Thomson 2146 (CHR - holotype; CHR, H, NMLU - isotypes).
Cladonia arbuscula subsp. beringiana Ahti, Ann. Bot. Soc. "Vanamo" 32, 1: 109 (1961).
Type locality: Canada, Northwest Territories [überprüfen], Mackenzie Dist., Great Bear Lake, Franklin Camp of Northern Transportation Co., at head of Great Bear River where it flows out of Great Bear Lake, 1951, Alton A. Lindsey 417 (under C. mitis; UPS). Some authors regard Cladonia mitis as a subspecies of C. arbuscula.
