Type locality: Portugal, Azores, Faial, Caldeira, 1937, R. Palhinha & L. Sobrinho (LISU - lectotype; REN-Abbayes - isolectotype). Designated by Burgaz & Ahti (2009).

Chemistry: Two chemical races:
No lichen substances.

Ecology: Data lacking.

Distribution type: The species is characterized as endemic to Macaronesia by Pisut (2009: 180), but has been mentioned earlier from Ireland by Seaward (1994: 183) and Great Britain by Coppins (2002: 16).

Taxonomy: This species coexists in the Azores with the very similar C. rangiformis, and is characterized by solid podetia, although occasionally it has a very narrow central canal, generally <50 µm wide, see Schumm & Aptroot (2013).

Note: The species was described as endemic from Faial, and later discovered in Madeira (Tavares 1952), the Canary Islands (Østhagen & Krog 1976), Ireland (Seaward 1994: 183) and Scotland (Coppins 2002: 16).
