Type locality: Tanzania, Tanga Province, Lushoto District, West Usambara Mountains, Balangai West Forest Reserve, E side of Kilimandege summit, elfin woodland and Philippia heath on the east side ridge of Kilimandege summit, 1730 m, 28 February 1984, A. Borhidi & M. Hedrén 8414/P (VBI - holotype; O - isotype).

Thallus: basal squamules not seen. Podetia up to 10 cm high, pale yellow to pale grey-green, repeatedly branched, the branching mainly trichotomous and tetrachotomous, with open axils. Branches 1-1.5-2.5 mm wide, with a discontinuous corticoid layer covering pale green areolae on a white to pale brown, arachnoid background, blackening towards the base. Podetial squamules very rare, about 1 mm long and wide, finely incised. Scyphi absent. Soredia absent. Apothecia brown. Pycnidia brown to blackish-brown, with purple jelly (Ahti et al. 1987: 92).
