Thallus: crustose, rimosely to verrucosely areolate, with greyish-white to greyish pruina, ca. 1 - 3 mm thick, covered by an epinecral layer. Apothecia urceolate to lecanorine, to 2.5 mm diameter. Excipulum proprium pseudoparenchymatous, brown, with periphysoids. Hypothecium hyaline, ca. 15 µm thick. Hymenium 110 - 180 µm tall, I-. Paraphyses simple, 1 - 2 µm broad. Asci I-, subclavate to cylindrical, 100 - 140 / 20 - 28 µm, 4 - 8-spored. Ascospores brown, muriform, 20 - 40 / 9 - 17 µm, with 3 - 6 transverse and 1 - 2 longitudinal septa. Anamorph: Pycnidia immersed in the thallus, hyaline to brownigh, cerebriform. Conidia ellipsoid, 4 - 6 / 1 - 1.5 µm (Lumbsch 1988: 20).

Photobiont: Trebouxia spec. (Lumbsch 1988: 21).

Chemistry: Lecanoric acid, diploschistesic acid by TLC, K+ yellow to red, C+ red, PD- (Lumbsch 1988: 22). Lecanoric acid, diploschistesic acid, orsellinic acid (Pérez-Vargas et al. 2012: 69)

Ecology: Terricolous on calcareous substrata, on soil in exposed habitats, also a member of the lichen flora of gypsaceous soil (Llimona 1974) (Lumbsch 1988: 22).

Distribution Type: Northern xeric (Lumbsch 1988: 22) and Peru. United States, Mexico, Macaronesia, Eurasia, northern Africa. Northern limit in southern Switzerland.
