Thallus: brownish tan to gray, continuous, smooth. Ascocarps usually completely covered by a powdery white thalline layer, appearing black only where this layer is rubbed, usually unbranched, 1.0-6.0 mm long, to nearly 1 mm wide. Disc not visible.
