Thallus: pale grey, areolate; areoles either dispersed or contiguous, flat to slightly convex; soralia usually concolorous with the thallus, rounded, often delimited by a raise margin; prothallus black, well-developed between areoles and at margin; medulla I- (rarely I+ violet). Apothecia uncommon; unknown in North American collections; generally small, 0.3-0.9 mm diam., but occasionally larger, sessile. Ascospores broad ellipsoid, 7-10 x 5-7 µm (Fryday 2008: 305).

Photobiont: Data lacking.

Chemistry: K-, C-, Pd-, UV+ white (medulla). Divaricatic acid by TLC (Fryday 2008: 305).

Ecology: Saxicolous on hard siliceous rocks, usually in shaded habitats (Fryday 2008: 305).

Distribution: Great Britain, Sweden, 3 localities in North America (Maine, Quebec). Database
