Thallus: grey, areolate; areoles continuous or dispersed (North American material) on a black prothallus; medulla I-. Apothecia immersed or slightly emergent, 0.3-0.6 mm diam., thin, pseudothalline margin present, forming a pale 'halo' around thick black zone, intercincta-type (cf. F. aleutica), disc black, flat, matt. Ascospores broad-ellipsoid, 10-13 x 7-8 µm (Fryday 2008: 305).

Chemistry: K-, C-, Pd, UV+ white (medulla). Divaricatic acid by TLC (Fryday 2008: 305).
