Type locality: Type locality: Chile, Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica Region [Spanish: Región de Magallanes y de la Antártica Chilena], Tierra del Fuego, near Cape Horn , Hermite Island, Mount Foster, September 1842, J. D. Hooker, Voyage Erebus & Terror (E - lectotype). Designated by Friday (2005: 315).

Chemistry: "Although this species was originally reported to have no chemical compounds (Kärnefelt & Thell 1993), Fryday (2005) detected fumarprotocetraric acid whereas fumarprotocetraric acid (major), protocetraric acid (minor), stictic acid (trace), succinprotocetraric acid (trace) and confumarprotocetraric acid (trace) have been detected by HPLC in the present study, none of which occur in H. lugubris" (Thell et al. 2007: 537).
