Description: Lichen. Thallus crustose, granular-warted, warts mostly coalescing to form a rimose-areolate crust, occasionally with poorly delimited sorediate patches or almost leprose; areoles more or less isodiametric to irregular in outline, av. diam. 0.1-0.2 mm, max. diam. 0.2-0.4 mm, weakly to strongly convex, or surface irregularly wrinkled, light gray to beige or ochre, with a yellowish or more rarely greenish tinge, matt herbarium specimens mostly covered with terpenoid crystals, especially where young and primordial apothecia are present. Soredia globose, 25-45 µm in diam. Apothecia rounded or irregularly deformed in outline, ± polygonal when densely crowded, single or densely crowded in large groups, sessile with constricted base or rarely ± appressed, av. siam. 0.45-0.65 mm, max. diam. 0.7-0.9 mm; disc light orange-brown to pinkish ochre, rarely with an olivaceous discoloration, flat to weakly (very rarely strongly) convex, whitish to pinkish, finely or more often coarsely pruinose, matt; margin weakly to strongly prominent when young, persistent, rarely excluded, of same color as thallus, slightly crenulate, in herbarium specimens usually densely covered by whitish terpenoid crystals and byssoid in outer appearance. Amphithecium decorticate, laterally 40-155 µm, basally 50-190 µm wide, filled with small brownish granules, of irregularly entangled, short-celled hyphae with lumina 1-2 µm wide, lumina of outer cells 1.0-2.5(-3.0) µm wide; algal cells in scattered groups throughout amphithecium; parathecium 10-40 µm wide, rarely completely missing; hypothecium 40-220 µm high, colorless or pale straw; subhymenium 30-90(-140) µm high; hymenium (40-)45-60 µm high, colorless to yellowish brown, sometimes with orange- to red-brown stripes; epihymenium 5-15 µm high, coarsely (-7.5 µm) granular, pale to sordid ochre, sometimes with a greenish tinge; paraphyses colorless, simple or weakly branched and anastomosing, with 1.0-1.2(-1.5) µm, apically 1-2 µm wide lumina. Ascospores colorless, simple, rarely 1-septate, (7.0-)10.0-13.1(-16.5) x (3.5-)4.0-5.7(-6.5) µm. Pycnidia unknown (Printzen 2001: 392)
