Santa Barbara Co., Santa Cruz Isl., N side of Central Valley, La Cascada W of U.C. field station, 34°00´30" N, 119°44´50" W, E facing slope, ca 150 m, on old wood, 25.9.1997, Printzen (US!, holotype; ASU, M, hb. Printzen, isotypes). Paratypes: U.S.A. California. Alameda Co., Univ. of Calif. Campus, Berkeley, Tavares 1785 (Colo). Riverside Co., Agua Tibia Wilderness, Ryan 26027, 26029 (ASU). No locality, no date, Hasse (NY).

Thallus: crustose, endosubstratal, esorediate, sometimes causing a whitish or grayish discoloration of the substratum. Apothecia rounded, single, rarely in groups of two to five, sessile with a constricted base, av. diam. 0.2-0.3 mm, max. diam. 0.30-0.35(-0.50) mm; disc light ochre or pinkish beige to orange-brown, flat to weakly convex, whitish pruinose when wet, matt or slightly glossy; margin weakly prominent in young apothecia, later excluded, or lacking from the beginning. Amohithecium corticate, laterally 20-30(-60) µm, basally 40-65 µm wide, of colorless, broadly cylindric hyphal cells with lumina (1-)1.5-2.0 µm wide, cortex 10-25 µm wide, cortical hyphae with lumina of 1-2 µm; hypothecium 10-30 µm high, colorless or weakly yellow; subhymenium 25-55 µm high; hymenium 35-40(-45) µm high, colorless or weakly yellowish; epihymenium lacking or 5-10(-15) µm high, ochre, finely granular; paraphyses simple or weakly branched and anastomosing, with 0.7-1.0 µm, apically (1-)1.5-2.0 µm wide lumina. Ascospores colorless, simple, rarely 1-septate, (6.0-)9.5-9.9(-11.0) x (2.5-)2.8-3.3(-4.0) µm. Pycnidia unknown (Printzen 2001: 394).

Photobiont: Green alga.

Chemistry: Thallus C-, K-, P-; usnic acid, ± zeorin.

Ecology: On old wood.
