Type: Mexico. Baja California Sur. 36 km NNW of Ciudad Insurgentes, just W of paved road, Magdalena region of Sonoran Desert, 25°40´ N, 111°58´ W, ca 50 m, on cactus wood, 20.3.1992, T. H. Nash 30486 (ASU! holotype). Nash 30487, 30509, 30513 (ASU), Wetmore 70191, 70192, 70197, 70200 (MIN), paratypes.

Thallus: crustose, granular-warted, warts often coalescing to form thick, rimose-areolate crust, often in parts or completely sorediate, rarely strongly reduced; areoles isodiametric to very irregular in outline, av. diam. 0.10-0.15(-0.30) mm, max. diam. 0.15-0.35(-0.70) mm, moderately to strongly convex, surface yellowish gray, beige or green, matt; soralia poorly delimited, of same color as non-sorediate parts of thallus, soredia globular, 20-25(-45) µm in diam., often as consoredia of 45-70 µm diam. Apothecia rounded or deformed to flexuose in outline, single or densely crowded, sessile with constricted base or ± appressed, av. diam. 0.5-0.8 mm, max. diam. 0.9-1.3(-1.7) mm; disc pale pinkish-ochre to orange-brown, flat to moderately convex, matt, finely to coarsely white-pruinose; thalline margin prominent when young, persistent, crenulate or granular-sorediate, of same color as thallus or covered by terpenoid crystals and then whitish-gray. Amphithecium ecorticate, laterally 55-110(-150) µm, basally (40-)75-15(-240) µm wide, filled with small brownish granules, of irregularly entangled, short-celled, colorless hyphae with lumina 1-2 µm wide, lumina of outer cells 1.0-2.0(-2.5) µm wide; parathecium 10-30 µm wide; hypothecium (40-)55-150(-250) µm high, colorless; subhymenium 25-70µm high; hymenium 40-50(-55) µm high, colorless or pale yellowish; epihymenium 5-15 µm high, greenish ochre to orange-brown, granular; paraphyses simple or weakly branched and anastomosing, colorless, with 0.7-1.0(-1.2) µm, apically 1.0-1.2(-1.5) µm wide lumina. Ascospores colorless, simple, rarely 1-septate, often slightly bent, (8.5-)10.1-15.6(-18.0) x (3.0-)3.4-3.9(-4.5) µm. Pycnidia ± ellipsoid, 95-135 x 200 µm diam., immersed in the thallus, wall unpigmented; conidia filiform and curved, 16.0-21.0 x 0.5-1.0 µm. (Printzen 2001, p. 400-401)

Chemistry: Thallus C+ orange or C-, K-, P-; Three chemotypes a) Usnic acid and zeorin; b) Usnic acid, ± thiophanic acid, ± arthothelin, ± 4,5-dichloronorlichexanthone (tr.), ± 4-chloronorlichexanthone (tr.), ± norlichexanthone (tr.), sometimes thiophanic acid, sometimes arthothelin as major substance, other xanthones only in traces; c) Usnic acid, arthothelin, one unidentified xanthone.
