Basionym: Data lacking.

Thallus: crustose, to subsquamulose, forming small to spreading lumpy mounds, to 7 cm diam., dark brown, rarely grey to grey brown (shade morphs), + shiny; areoles 1-2(-4) mm across, flat to convex, polygonal or somewhat subsquamulose, tightly packed, + turgid, often contiguous and + coalescing; lower surface deep brown-black. Apothecia 0.5-1(-1.5) mm diam., discrete or becoming confluent, + immersed or adnate; true exciple thin when young, becoming excluded when mature; disc round, dull brown-black, red-brown when moist; hymenium 60-70 µm tall. Paraphyses 2-3 µm wide, the apices to 4 µm. Asci 50-55 x 10-12 µm. Ascospores 12-16 x 5.5-7 µm (Purvis 1992: 340).

Photobiont: Trebouxioid green alga.

Chemistry: Thallus Pd-, K-, KC-, C-. No lichen substances (Purvis 1992: 340).

Ecology: On peaty soils and acid gravels, rarely on bare rock on exposed mountain sides and summits (Purvis 1992: 340).
