Note: Jørgensen & James (1983: 117): "The status of this as a distinct taxon has been much in doubt, particularly in Europe (Du Rietz 1922: 321). However, as pointed out by Sierk (1964: 303), Leptogium corticola is a well delimited species. some of the past confusion is due to extreme, unusually strongly striate morphs of L. cochleatum. Leptogium corticola is a much thicker, strongly and densely wrinkled species, often developing pustules that tend to elongate as the thallus grows, forming a regular radiating pattern. Leptogium corticola normally has a shinier thallus surface than L. cochleatum, frequently with a greenish, nearly torquoise, cast, often also slightly brownish."
