Lethariella canariensis (Ach.) Krog

Norw. J. Bot. 23: 83 - 106.

Basionym: Alectoria canariensis Ach., Lich. Univ.: 597 (1810).

Type locality: Spain, Canary Islands, Herb. Montagne (PC - lectotype). Designated by Obermeier (xx).

Description: Lichen. Thallus fruticose, pendulous or prostrate, to 30 cm long, predominantly dichotomously branched. Branches bright orange, pale grey in basal parts of the thallus, terete or somewhat angular, more or less flattened at points of branching, surface dull, smooth. Isidia and soredia absent. Cortex of uneven thickness, 40 - 75 µm, with ridges projecting into the medulla. Medulla for the most bart dense and compressed. Axis variable, usually occupying more than one half of the width of the branch. Apothecia extremely rare, 3 - 5 mm in diameter (Redón & Huneck 1973: xx) in a specimen from La Palma, thalline exciple efibrillose, opaque, epruinose, dark brown disc. Spores 5 - 6 / 7 - 8 µm (Krog 1976: 91).

Photobiont: Green algae.

Chemistry: Atranorin and canarione ["canarionic acid"] in the cortex, no medulla substances (Krog 1976: 91).
Ecology: Saxicolous or corticolous, on Pinus canariensis and silicious stone.

Distribution type: Canary Islands: Hierro, La Palma, Gomera, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Portugal: Madeira. The status as an endemic of the Canary Islands has been lost when the species has been discovered on Madeire in xxx.

Taxonomy: Data lacking.

Note: "Since no Acharian type specimen seems to exist, Motyka (1936-38) indicated as neotype a specimen in Montagne's herbarium (PC). Follmann, Redón & Huneck (1973) proposed another neotype (not lectotype, as claimed) in Herbarium Follmannianum, since the specimen in Montagne's herbarium consisted of a sterile fragment. However, the requirements for a change of neotype are not present in this case, and Motyka's choice must be followed (Code, Article 8)" (Krog 1976: 91).
