Lethariella cashmeriana Krog

Protologue: Kashmir, Astor District, above Doyen, Astor Valley, 11-12,000 ft. 14.8.92. Leg. J. F. Duthie (BM).

Type locality: India, Kashmir, Astor District, above Doyen, Astor Valley, ca. 4000 m, 14 August 1992, J. F. Duthie (BM).

Thallus: fruticose, erect, ca. 5 cm high, repeatedly dichotomously branched. Branches to 1 mm thick, of even width with obtuse apices, orange, pale grey towards the base. Surface strongly ridged and wrinkled. Soralia in upper parts of the branches, flat, irregular spreading, with orange soredia. Axis varying in width, usually about half of the width of the branch, the wider parts with longitudinal fissures towards the centre, medulla loose, cortex thin and fragile, 20 - 25 µm. Apothecia unknown. Pycnidia unknown (Krog 1976: 93).

Chemistry: Atranorin and canarione ["canarionic acid"] in the cortex, gyrophoric acid in the medulla (Krog 1976: 93). Atranorin, canarione, gyrophoric acid, norstictic acid (minor) by TLC (Obermayer 2001: 322).
Ecology: Lignicolous in 3300 - 3750 m.
