Lethariella intricata (Moris) Krog

Thallus: shrubby to subpendulous, up to 15 cm long, but usually shorter, irregular branched. Branches pale grey in the basal parts of the thallus, dark grey distally, terete. Surface more or less scrobiculate. Isidia abundant, dispersed over large and small branches. soredia absent. Cortex thin, 20 - 40 µm. Medulla thin, dense. Axis hollow in older parts of the branch, the cavity traversed by a few strands of hyphal tissue. Apothecia extremely rare, lateral, subpedicellate, thalline exciple scrobiculate-verrucose, thalline margin crenate, disc black, spores 2 - 3 / 7 - 9 µm, 8 in the ascus (Jatta 1900, Krog 1976: 95).

Algae: Green algae.

Chemistry: Atranorin in the cortex, merochlorophaeic acid, 4-0-methylcryptochlorophaeic acid in the medulla (Krog 1976: 95). Atranorin, chloratranorin, merochlorophaeic acid, 4-0-methylcryptochlorophaeic acid (Follmann 1978: 372 possibly only citation).

Ecology: Saxicolous or corticolous.
