Opegrapha keyensis F. Seavey & J. Seavey

Bryologist 117, 1: 64 (2014).

Synonyms: Index Fungorum

Protolog: Thallus brownish gray. Ascomata lirelliform, immersed, black. Exciple carbonized laterally. Hymenium not inspersed. Ascospores hyaline, 11-15-celled, 45-54 x 5-6 µm. Pycnidia brown, 0.06-0.10 mm wide. Conidia filiform, arcuate, 0.80-.15 x 1 µm. Thallus containing gyrophoric acid. Similar in ascospore size to both O. prosodea and O. bonplandii but differing by its immersed lirellae, laterally carbonized exciple and chemistry.
Type: U.S.A. Florida. Monroe County: Everglades National Park, Murray Key. 25°06' N 80°56' W, corticolous on Rhizophora mangle, in moderate shade about 20 meters from Florida Bay within a mixed mangrove open canopy forest, 24 Feb. 2010, F. Seavey & J. Seavey 3937E (holotype: FNPS; isotype: FLAS).

Thallus: ecorticate, esorediate, epiphloeic, verruculose, continuous, determinate, ca. 80-100 µm thick, pale brownish gray. Ascomata lirelliform, erumpent, abundant, black, epruinose but often appearing pruinose due to complete thalline cover, partly branched, 0.6-1.5 x 0.12-0.20 mm, labia roughened tightly convergent at first becoming open revealing brown disc, straight to flexuous. Excipulum black, thickly carbonized laterally, 80-120 µm wide, open at the base or with a weak, thin basal semi-carbonized layer forming. Hypothecium hyaline to pale brown, 30-40 µm tall, I+ blue becoming red or I+ red, KI+ blue. Hymenium hyaline, not inspersed, 110-140 µm tall, I+ blue becoming red or I+ red, KI+ blue. Paraphysoids branched and anastomosing, ca. 1-1.5 µm wide. Epihymenium pale to dark brown, 12-18 µm tall, I+ weakly red, KI+ blue. Asci clavate, 80-112 x 19-21 µm, 8-spored. Ascospores hyaline, oblong, narrowly ellipsoid to fusiform, 45-54 x 5-6 µm, 11-15-celled, usually constricted at mid septa at maturity, type 1 ontogeny. Perispore 5-7 µm wide. Pycnidia common, brown, 0.06-0.10 mm wide. Conidia filiform, arcuate, 0.80-0.15 x 1 µm (Seavey et al. 2014: 64).
