Parmelia Ach.

Type species: Parmelia saxatilis (L.) Ach.

Characterization: A foliose lichen genus in the Parmeliaceae with 13 species.

Description: Thallus foliose, corticate above and below. Photobiont green. Upper cortex with marginal and laminal, linear, effigurate pseudocyphellae. Marginal cilia absent. Rhizines mainly simple or sqarrose. Apothecia with thalline exciple, disc often perforate. Spores colourless, simple, ellipsoid, 8 per ascus. Pycnidia laminal, pycnoconidia indistinctly bifusiform, 4-6µm long.
