Thallus: foliose, adnate, more or less rosette-forming, to 10 cm diam., irregularly branched, pale grey with a bluish tinge. Lobes sublinear, often imbricate, apically rounded, partly pruinose, 2-6 rmn wide, ciliate, cilia black, to 0.7 mm long; isidia very common apically flattened, ? branched, dark, blackish at tips. Lower surface black; rhizines black and simple, 1-2 mm long. Apothecia rare, sessile, rhizinate, to 4 mm diam.; disc brown, Spores ellipsoid, 8-11 x 5-6 μm. Pycnidia immersed, black. Conidia slightly dumbbell-shaped, c. 5 x 1 &mu,m.

Photobiont: Data lacking.

Chemistry: Cortex C-, K+ yellow, KC-, PD-; atranorin. Medulla C+ red, K-, KC+ red, PD-; lecanoric acid.

Ecology: Corticolous, on bark of deciduous trees in parks and other nutrient-enriched habitats, as manured maritime rocks on its northem and eastern limit.

Distribution Type: Infrequent along the west coasts of southem Fennoscandia and on Bomholm. A single locality on maritime rocks in SW Finland. Temperate western, central and southern Europe to Ural Mts., also Caucasus, with oceanic tendencies.
