Parmotrema amaniense (J. Steiner & Zahlbr.) Krog & Swinscow

Description: Lichen. Thallus foliose, membranaceous to more or less coriaceous, loosely attached, pale grey. Lobes 0.5 - 1.5 cm wide, crenate, ciliate, cilia 3 - 5 - 7 mm long. Upper side emaculate. Medulla white. Under side black, with a narrow brown or rarely white mottled marginal zone, rhizines sparese. Isidia and soredia absent. Apothecia up to 1.7 cm in diameter, submarginal on swollen stipes which become somewhat constricted with age, or marginal and eccentrically situated on semitubular, convoluted lobes, thalline margin normally lobulate-dentate and ciliate, disc imperforate. Spores thickwalled, 25 - 40 / 15 - 18 µm. Pycnoconidia weakly sublageniform, 5 - 8 µm long (Swinscow & Krog 1988: 169).

Photobiont: Probably Trebouxia.

Chemistry:
Race I: Protocetraric acid, alectoronic acid, atranorin.
Race II: Protocetraric acid, alpha-collatolic acid, more or less alectoronic acid (trace), atranorin.
Race III: Protocetraric acid, more or less protolichesterinic acid, atranorin (All PD+ orange-red) (all Swinscow & Krog 1988: 169).

Ecology: Corticolous. In East Africa in lower montane forest at 800 to 1200 (2000) m altitude, locally common in Tanzania, otherwise rare.

Distribution type: Western and southern Africa. Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia.

Taxonomy: Data lacking.

Note: Parmotrema amaniense may be considered the parent morph of the sorediate Parmotrema subarnoldii (Swinscow & Krog 1988: 169).
