Parmotrema bangii (Vain.) Hale

Basionym: Parmelia bangii Vain. in Schmidt, Bot. Tidsskr. 29: 104 (1909).

 

Type locality: xxx (PH 995961 - isotype).
Thallus: foliose, membranaceous, loosely attached, pale green-grey. Lobes 0.5 - 1 cm wide, crenate, sparingly ciliate, cilia o.5 - 1 - 2 mm long. Upper cortex emaculate, fragile, cracking and flaking, folded and rugose towards the centre. Medulla white. Under side smooth, shiny, black, with a pale brown marginal zone, rhizines mostly dense, in some places reaching almost to the margins. Soralia developing as pustules in a wide submarginal zone, soredia granular. Apothecia not seen in East African material. In the holotype specimen apothecia are substipitate, thalline exciple sorediate, disc imperforate, spores 30 - 40 / 15 - 20 µm, thick walled. Pycnidia present. Pycnoconidia rot-shaped to shortly filiform, 8 - 10 µm long (Swinscow & Krog 1988: 169).

Algae: Trebouxioid green alga.

Chemistry: Stictic acid (K+ yellow, PD+ orange), constictic acid, atranorin (Swinscow & Krog 1988: 169).

Ecology: Corticolous. In East Africa in montane forests and inselbergs at 1500 to 3200 m altitude, uncommon (Swinscow & Krog 1988: 169).

Distribution: In South America in Bolivia, Brazil and Venezuela, in Africa in Madeira, the Canary Islands, Mauritius, Rwanda, Zaire, and in Europe in the Azores.
