Parmotrema hicksii Krog & Swinscow

Protolog: Thallus corticola, laxe adnatus, subvirido-griseus. Lobi orbiculares, 0.8-1,2 cm lati, crenati, ciliis3-4 mm longis, superne emaculati. Isidia marginalia et submarginalia, complanata vel breviter cylindrica, plerumque ciliata. Apothecia et pycnidia ignota. Acidum gyrophoricum, acidum psoromicum, et atranorinum continens.

Typus: Tanzania: West Usambara Mts, montane rain forest on the SW ridge of Gonia NE of Mazumbai village, 1500-1700 m alt., 18 January 1985, T. Pócs 8505/DB (VBI-holotypus).

Thallus: foliose, loosely attached to the substratum, pale green-grey. Lobes rounded, 0.8-1.2 cm broad, crenate, ciliate, cilia numerous, slender, 3-4 mm long. Upper side emaculate. Medulla white. Under side black with a shiny, pale brown to ivory marginal zone, rhizines black, simple, coarse, in scattered groups. Soredia absent. Isidia marginal and submarginal, flattened to shortly cylindrical, often with long cilia. Apothecia unknown. Pycnidia unknown (Krog & Swinscow 1986: 292).

Photobiont: Trebouxioid green alga.

Chemistry: Gyrophoric acid, psoromic acid, atranorin (t.l.c.). Medulla C+ rose, PD+ sulphur yellow (Krog & Swinscow 1986: 292). While the psoromic acid in Parmotrema direagens is restricted to the soralia and in P. jacarandicola to apothecium-bearing lobes and the thalline exciple of the apothecia, it appears to occur throughout the thallus in P. hicksii (Krog & Swinscow 1986: 293).
