Psiloparmelia distincta (Nyl.) Hale

Basionym: Parmelia distincta Nyl., Ann. Sci. Nat. Bot., ser. 4, 15; 374. 1861.

Type: Bolivia, Prov. Yungas, Weddell s.n. (H—NYL 34819 lectotype selected by Gyelnik 1938).

 

Thallus: foliose, dorsiventral, heteromerous, lobate, orbicular, 3-15 cm diameter, tightly to loosely adnate, saxicolous; lobes subirregular to sublinear-elongate, apically rotund to narrow and incised, margins without cilia; upper cortex of palisade plectenchyma covered in part by a rudimentary pored epicortex; upper cortex smooth or wrinkled, pruinose, pustules or soralia present or absent, pseudocyphellae and isidia absent; medulla white; lower surface black, velvety, minutely papillate but lacking rhizines. Apothecia adnate to substipitate, 2-5 mm diameter, spores 8 per ascus, spherical to elliptical, 9-l2 x 5-9 µm. Pycnidia immersed, conidia bifusiform, 5-7 x 0.5 µm.

Algae: Green alga.

Chemistry: Cell walls containing isolichenan.

Ecology: on rock, high Andean puna.
