Description: Lichen. Thallus fruticose, up to 4 cm high, subdichotomously or irregularly branched. Branches generally hollow but often partly compressed, dorsiventral, the upper side greyish green, opaque, faintly longitudinally striate, the under side of same colour or pale grey or tan, with coalescing perforations separated by strands of mechanical tissue. Medulla loosely woven, medullary layer continuous, often with embedded strands of chondroid tissue in part originating from the disintegrating under side. Soredia absent. Apothecia numerous, terminal on main branches and on short, subapical lateral branches, often spurred, at first concave, partly immersed in the branch, later plane or convex, to 1 cm diam., disc ivory, rarely dark and discoloured, thalline exciple occasionally with lobules, usually with a narrow white line surrounding the hymenium. Spores broadly ellipsoid, varying from straight to strongly curved, 12 - 15 / 5 -7 µm (Swinscow & Krog 1988: 277).

Chemistry: Thallus divaricatic acid, hymenium small amounts of salazinic acid (Swinscow & Krog 1988: 277). Divaricatic acid, sometimes with traces of usnic acid or an unidentified compound (Alstrup et al. 2010: 347).

Ecology: Corticolous on tree trunks and branches in open woodland and on fence posts, common and widespread from 1200 to 3400 m (Swinscow & Krog 1988: 277).
