Thallus: Green, caespitose or rarely pendulous, usually less than 6 cm long but occasionally to 20 cm, sparingly to much branched, the branching usually dichotomous; branches variable, 1 - 5 mm broad, flattened, tuberculate, channeled. Apothecia common and abundant, marginal but often appearing subterminal, 1 - 10 mm broad, the disk tan, concave or convex; spores ellipsoid, 1-septate, 3 - 4 x 10 - 14 µm.

Chemistry: Usnic and salazinic acids. Cortex K-; medulla K+ red, C-, PD+ red.
Ecology: Common; on trees and shrubs, especially Roystonea elata; south Florida and the Keys, and occasionally northward along the coast. General distribution: Southeastern United States and the West Indies.
