Type: Spain, Canary Islands, Hierro, Riscos de Casitas, on Euphorbia obtusifolia,

 

Thallus: fruticose, subpendulous to pendulous, 5 - 12 - 20 cm long, with several laciniae from a common holdfast. Laciniae irregularly branched, branches matt, stramineous, flattened, rarely canaliculate, 1 - 6 mm broad near the base, gradually tapering to 0.5 - 3 mm distally, smooth to rugose, often longitudinally ridged and pitted, margins uneven, more or less undulate, occasionally with short, divergent secondary branches, apices acute. Pseudocyphellae laminal and or marginal, common near the base, sometimes occurring as scattered short lines along the length of the laciniae, marginal pseudocyphellae often causing separetion of the upper and lower tissue layers, exposing the medulla. Soralia absent. Cortex compressed, indistinct, chondroid cylinder continuous, medulla lax. Apothecia lateral, marginal and laminal on straight or geniculate branches, up to 1 cm in diameter, at first deeply concave, becoming flat at maturity, thalline exciple smooth or weakly ridged, thalline margin occasionally with laciniae, disc entire or radially split and incised, spores 12 - 14 / 3 - 4 - 5 µm, straight or curved (Krog & Østhagen 1980: 278).

Chemistry: K sufflavus, K + N flavus; cortex with usnic acid, medulla with divaricatic acid. (Follmann xxx)

Race I: Cortex with usnic acid (Follmann xxxx), divaricatic acid, triterpenoids (Krog & Østhagen 1980: 278).
Race II: Cortex with usnic acid (Follmann xxx), no medullary substances (Krog & Østhagen 1980: 278 rare in samples from the Canary Islands).
