Type: Husn. Pl. Canar. 214 (H-NYL 37172 - lectotype designated by Krog & Osthagen 1980: 279, PC - isolectotype).

 

Thallus: fruticose, shrubby, erect to subpendulous, up to 12 cm long and 8 cm broad, with one or few laciniae from a narrow holdfast. Laciniae smooth, subshiny, stramineous to pale green-grey, moderately to richly divergently branched, branches 0.5 - 1.5 - 3 mm broad, terete, flat, or more or less grooved and channeled, tapering distally, apices attenuate, often recurved, lateral branchlets common. Pseudocyphellae inconspicuous, short, slightly raised, mainly marginal. Soralia absent. Cortex 10 - 15 µm thick, chondroid cylinder continuous, medulla lax. Pycnidia with pale ostioles. Apothecia usually numerous, lateral in distal half or straight or geniculate branches, sometimes apical and spurred, 2 - 3 - 5 mm in diameter, disc flat or more rarely convex at maturity, spores 14 - 17 / 4 - 5 µm, some with subterminal pseudosepta(Krog & Osthagen 1980: 279).

Chemistry:
Race I: Salazinic acid, more or less trace of norstictic acid. (Krog & Osthagen 1980: 280)
Race II: Norstictic acid, more or less trace of salacinic acid (Krog & Osthagen 1980: 280).
Race III: Protocetraric acid (Krog & Osthagen 1980: 280).
Race IV: Hypoprotocetraric acid (Krog & Osthagen 1980: 280).
Race IV: no medullary substances (Krog & Osthagen 1980: 280).

Ecology: Corticolous or rarely saxicolous.
