Type: New Foundland, J. M. Despreaux, 1828 (PC - holotype, H-NYL 37387 - isotype) [Usnic acid, homosekikaic acid, sekikaic acid, 4'-O-methylnorhomosekikaic acid, 4'-O-demethylsekikaic acid (trace)].

 

Thallus: fruticose, 1 - 2 - 3 cm long, sparsely or richly and irregularly or dichotomously branched, growing from an delimited holdfast. Branches stramineous (in herbarium specimens), solid, up to 1.5 mm wide, flattened to subterete, tips often ending in soralia, surface shiny, smooth or more or less striate. Pseudocyphellae small, ellipsoid, often forming soredia. Soralia marginal or laminal, ellipsoid or confluent, often with isidioid branchlets. Thallus 100 - 200 µm thick; cortex 25 - 30 µm thick; chondroid layer clearly cracked; medulla continuous. Apothecia and pycnidia not seen in Japanese materials (Kashiwadani 1987: 135).

Algae: Green alga.

Chemistry: Usnic acid, homosekikaic acid, sekikaic acid, 4'-O-methylnorhomosekikaic acid (Kashiwadani 1987: 135).

Ecology: saxicolous.
