Lichenologist 22, 3: 243 (1990).

Protolog: Thallus saxicola, ascendens vel plus minusve inclinatus, usque ad 3 cm altus, perfragilis, modice ramosus. Rami solidi, 0.3-0.8 mm lati, subteretes, gradatim protracti, pseudocyphelis linearibus vel ellipsoideis instructi. Soredia nulla. Apothecia frequentia, lateralia, ad 2 mm diametro, sporis bilocularis, 12-13 x 5-6 µm. Acidum divaricatum, acidum salazinicum, triterpenoidea, et acidum usnicum (exiguum) continens.

Protolog type data: Portugal, Madeira, Porto Santo, Pico do Facho, 33°05'N, 16°19'W, on acidic rock, 350-500 m alt., 7 April 1988, R. Haugan, H. Krog, & E. Timdal 6163 (O—holotypus).

Type locality: Portugal, Madeira Islands, Porto Santo, Pico do Facho, on acidic rock, 400 m, 7 April 1988, R. Haugan, H. Krog, & E. Timdal 6163 (O — holotype).

Type locality coordinates: 33°05'N, 16°19'W.

Molecular barcode: Data lacking.

Thallus: saxicolous, ascending or more or less decumbent, fragile, up to 3 cm long, several thalli growing close together from separate holdfasts. Laciniae solid, 0.3 - 0.8 mm wide, subterete, uneven, tapering to attenuate apices, here and there with fragmentation areas; shortly linear to ellipsoid pseudocyphellae present on all branches. Soredia absent. Cortex c. 25 µm thick, chondroid tissue filling most of the branch, medullary tissue and algal cells mainly centrally located, penetrating to the surface in pseudocyphellae. Apothecia common, lateral on more or less geniculate branches, disc up to 2 mm diam.; spores bilocular, 12 - 13 x 5 - 6 µm (Krog 1990: 243).

Photobiont: Green alga.

Chemistry: Divaricatic acid, salazinic acid, triterpenoids, usnic acid (trace) by TLC (Krog 1990: 243).

Ecology: Saxicolous, on acidic rock.

Distribution Type: Known only from the type locality on the Pico do Facho and on another old volcano nearby, Terra Chã (Fungal Red List Initiative).
