Ramalina mollis Krog & Østhagen

Type locality: Spain, Canary Island, Lanzarote, La Geria, ca. 5 km ENE of Yaiza, 320 m, Krog & Østhagen 1055 (O - holotype; BM, TFMC, UPS - isotypes). TLC: bourgeanic acid.

Description: Lichen. Thallus fruticose, soft, especially when moist, ascending or partly decumbent, up to 5 cm high, with few to numerous undivided or sparingly to moderately branched laciniae from a common holdfast. Laciniae broadly expanded, 1 mm to 5 cm broad, flat, both sides more or less sharp reticulate ridged, most pronunced on the uppersurface, upper side stramineous to grey-green, under side concolorous or pale brown to buff. Pseudocyphellae absent. Soralia and isidia absent. Cortex 20 - 50 µm thick, soft, chondroid tissue absent, medulla fairly dense. Pycnidia with pale ostioles. Apothecia common, often numerous along the margins and on the upper side, sometimes also on the under side, up to 8 mm in diameter, at first deeply concave, becoming flat at maturity, thalline exciple smooth or ridged, disc ochraceous, spores ellipsoid, one-septate, straight or slightly curved, 10 - 15 / 3.5 - 6 µm (Østhagen & Krog 1976: 234, Krog & Østhagen 1980: 283).

Photobiont: Data lacking.

Chemistry: Medulla K-, C-, KC-, PD-, usnic acid, bourgeanic acid (Østhagen & Krog 1976: 234, Krog & Østhagen 1980: 283).

Ecology: Saxicolous or corticolous.

Distribution type: Canary Islands, Morokko.
