Ramalina parva Krog & Østhagen

Type locality: Spain, Canary Islands, Fuerteventura, Montana Muda, 550 - 690 m, Krog & Osthagen 1371 (O - holotype, BM, TFMC, UPS - isotypes). TLC: Divaricatic acid.

Description: Lichen. Thallus fruticose, soft and fragile, forming loosely fastened, compacted, more or less hemispherical tufts up to 1.5 cm high and 3 cm in diameter, without a distinct, delimited holdfast. Laciniae densely and intricately branched, 0.4 - 0.8 mm broad, stramineous to pale green-grey, semipellucid, fistulose, unevenly inflated, with mainly apical perforations. Pseudocyphellae absent. Soralia absent. Cortex indistinct, chondroid cylinder continuous, medulla consisting of a few fungal hyphae enveloping isolated groups of algal cells, adhering to the inner wall of the chondroid cylinder. Apothecia and pycnidia unknown (Krog & Østhagen 1980: 284).

Photobiont: Data lacking.

Chemistry: Divaricatic acid (Krog & Østhagen 1980: 284). Usnic acid in the cortex (Feuerer 68327 in HBG).

Ecology: Saxicolous. R. parva grows on vertical or overhanging cliffs in shaded situations between 400 and 700 m altitude.

Distribution type: Endemic in Fuerteventura.

Taxonomy: Data lacking.

Note: In the original description (Krog & Osthagen 1978) Ramalina parva was mistakenly said to reach a height of 3 cm. This measurement refers to the maximum diameter of the tufts, while the height does not exceed 1.5 cm.
