Ramalina pollinaria (Westr.) Ach.

Lichenogr. Universalis: 608 (1810).

Basionym: Lichen pollinarius Westr., Kongl. Vetensk. Acad. Nya Handl. 16: 56 (1795)

Synonym: Index Fungorum

Type: Howe (1913) noted that the type was possibly from Sweden, but that a Westring type was unknown. He noted that there were varietal types in the Acharius herbarium at H. Krog & James (1977) designated a neotype (H-Ach 1831D, var. humilis material) and an isoneotype (BM-Ach 804A).

 

Thallus: fruticose-caespitose, 2 - 3 cm high, densely, rarely moderately and irregularly branched. Branches stramineous, solid, bilateral, flat, of irregular width, 0.2 - 3 mm wide, apices often finely divided. Soralia ellipsoid a thte margins, irregularly spreading laminally and apically, with subgranular soredia and coarse, dorticate granules. Apothecia not seen in East Africa material (Swinscow & Krog 1988: 286).

Chemistry: Cortex K- or faintly K+, Cortex + (+)-usnic acid, Medulla: Evernic acid and/or obtusatic acid, orsellinic acid, Orsellinsäuremethylester, 3-Methyl-4-osymethylorsellinsäure (potentially Spaltprodukte). 2 unidentified substances in traces. Evernic acid 80 % of the secondary substances, obtusatic acid 15 %, usnic acid in traces (Follmann & Geyer 1983: 105). Evernic acid, obtusatic acid (Swinscow & Krog 1988: 286).

Ecology: Corticolous on trees in montane forest at 2900 to 3000 m altitude, rare (Swinscow & Krog 1988: 286).
