Ramalina polymorpha (Lilj.) Ach.

Lich. Univ.: 600 (1810).

Basionym: Lichen calicaris var. polymorphus Lilj., Utk. Svensk Fl. 2. ed.: 426 (1798). (Swinscow & Krog 1988: 286).

Synonym: Index Fungorum

Type: Sweden, [TLC: no medullary substances] (H-ACH 1804A - lectotype).

 

Thallus: fruticose, rigid, ascending, with several laciniae from a proliferating holdfast. Laciniae stramineous, matt, repeatedly branched, branches longitudinally grooved and striate, flattened, 0.8 - 4 mm broad at the base, tapering and often becoming subterete distally, more or less finely divided at apices. Pseudocyphellae shortly linear. Cortex compressed, 25 - 40 µm thick, chondroid cylinder disrupted, chondroid strands in part traversing the medulla and in cross section appearing to be imbedded in it. Soralia subapical to apical, capitate, labriform, or under helmet-shaped pustules. Apothecia and pycnidia not seen in Canarian material (Krog & Østhagen 1980: 286).

Chemistry: Uscinc acid in cortex. No medullary substances (Krog & Østhagen 1980: 286).

Ecology: Saxicolous. Preferring nitrogen-rich bird rocks.
