Thallus: up to 4 cm high, irregularly branched. Branches hollow and unevenly inflated, with perforations on under side and often at the tips of sterile branches. Upper side with the surface opaque, frequently with a nodulose appearance, greyish green, under side pale gey, tan, or blackened, the difference in colour at times giving the plant a dorsiventral appearance, ultimate tips of young branches sometimes white and powdery. Medullary layer dense, continuous, smooth or rarely longitudinally grooved. Soredia absent. Apothecia common, terminal on main branches and on short, subapical lateral branches, very rarely spurred, at first concave and partly immersed in the branch, later becoming flat or convex, to 8 mm diameter, disc ivory, tan, or reddish brown. Spores ellipsoid or fusiform, 15 - 17 / 5 - 6 µm, mostly straight (Swinscow & Krog 1988: 287).

Chemistry: Substances in the sekikaic acid agg.; hymenium may contain small amounts of norstictic acid (Swinscow & Krog 1988: 287).

Ecology: Common and widesprea on tree trunks and branches in the lower montane forest and mist-affected woodland at 1400 to 2300 m altitude (Swinscow & Krog 1988: 287 for East Africa).
