Ramalina scoparia Vain.

Bryologist 107, 1: 104 (2004).

Type: RUSSIA. Sakhalinskaya Oblast. Matua Island, Joneson 1936 (WTU); Onekotan Island, Joneson 1719 (WTU); Simushir Island, Joneson 1965 (WTU).

Thallus: The similarity of Ramalina scoparia to R. kurokawae Kashiw. from Japan is notable. Both of these lowland saxicolous species have caespitose to decumbent fistulose thalli forming tufts up to three cm tall, with narrow and highly branched laciniae up to 1.5 mm broad and terminal soralia found under curled branch tips.

Chemistry: Historically, it contained only usnic acid and the sekikaic acid complex (Krog 1968). However IKIP specimens contain divaricatic acid in addition to the sekikaic acid complex and usnic acid.

Ecology: Grows on boulders and cliffs near the seashore, as well as at higher inland elevations, throughout the archipelago.

Note: R. scoparia is found from Siberia to Alaska (Krog 1968; Mikulin 1990; Thomson 1984).
