Type: United Kingdom, England, Region South-West, Devon, [historic county Wiltshire], Grey Wethers, ca. 100 m, date unknown (OXF - lectotypified by Krog & James 1977: xx).

Thallus: erect or rarely subpendulous, caespitose, 1.5 - 3 - 8 cm long, growing from a common holdfast. Branches solid, yellowish green, simple or sparingly branched, 1 - 3 - 5 mm wide, dorsiventral or terete, dorsiventral branches flattened or more or less slightly canaliculate, mat or subnitid, surface smooth or uneven, irregularly ridged by protruded pycnidia, rarely foveolate. Pseudocyphellae ellipsoid or orbicular, often with slit or tiny crackes near the center, laminal or marginal, sparse or rarely very conspicuous especially towards the base. Thallus 300 - 800 - 1000 µm thick; cortex indistincty, ca. 10 µm thick; chondroid tissue continuous or dissected by pseudocyphellae, often penetrating into the medulla, clearly to moderately cracked, 50 - 180 - 300 µm thick. Apothecia common, subterminal, submarginal or laminal, lateral on terete branches; disc flat becoming convex with age; thalline exciple entire, pseudocyphellate; hymenium 60 - 65 µm high; hypothecium 30 - 40 µm thick; proper exciple 50 - 100 µm thick; chondroid tissue of thalloid exciple conspicuous, often connected with proper exciple; ascospores colorless, short fusiform, 2-celled, with or without additional septa, 10 - 12 / 4 - 5 µm. Pycnidia common, pale colored (Kashiwadani 1992: 64).

Photobiont: Green alga.
