Type:
Thallus: fruticose, erect, spiky, 3 - 6 - 10 cm long, tufted, holdfast spreading, tendency to form swards, yellowish. Soralia excavate, soredia granular, 25 - 60 µm in diameter.
Chemistry: Cortex usnic acid. Soralia and medulla K + red if norstictic acid chemotype.
Ecology: Saxicolous, on acidic seashore rocks, very rarely on rocks by lakes or corticolous, rarely on old Calluna stems (Purvis et al. 1992: 526, Santesson 1984: 267).
