Ramalina subpusilla (Nyl.) Krog & Swinscow

Basionym: Ramalina geniculata * R. subpusilla Nyl., Bot. Soc. Linn. Normand., Sér. 2, 4: 164 (1870).

Synonym: Index Fungorum

Type: India orientalis, in montibus Nilgherrensibus, Perottet (H-NYL 36854 - Lectotype) [TLC: Salazinic acid].

 

Thallus: fruticose, up to 2.5 cm high, with one or few richly subdichotomously branched laciniae from a narrow holdfast. Laciniae stramineous to pale green-grey, semipellucid, 0.3 - 1.2 mm broad, fistulose, mainly terete, sparingly perforate. Upper surface opaque, faintly longitudinally striate, under side with perforations. Soralia absent. Cortex indistinct, chondroid cylinder continuous, medulla lax to moderately dense, mainly discontinuous. Apothecia numerous, subapical or apical, partly immersed and concave when young, spurred, spurs often long and slender, disc flat at maturity, up to 4 mm in diameter, spores 10 - 12 - 14 / 4 - 6 - 7 µm, straight or slightly curved (Swinscow & Krog 1988: 288) (Krog & Østhagen 1980: 291).

Chemistry: Cortex with usnic acid, Medulla salazinic acid. Thallus K+ red, PD+ orange (Swinscow & Krog 1988: 288) (Krog & Østhagen 1980: 291).

Ecology: Corticolous.
