Thallus: endo-, more usually epi-substratal, thin, light grey to glaucous to brownish, discontinuous, becoming continuous, sometimes rimose-areolate, areoles to ca. 0.4 mm wide; surface plane, matt or + glossy; margin indeterminate; prothallus absent; vegetative propagules present; soredia to ca. 25 µm diameter, developing in discrete, irregularly rounded soralia 0.30-0.50 mm diameter, yellowish- or brownish-green, sometimes becoming convex. Apothecia rare, frequent .... (Sheard 2010: 183).

Chemistry: Spot tests, soralia K-, C- or C+ orange when yellow, KC-, P-; secondary metabolites, atranorin (trace), secalonic acid A (major), thiomelin and 5,7-dichloro-8-hydroxy-2-methoxy-1,3-dimethylxanthone (minor) (Elix and Tønsberg 1999), also zeorin, xanthones rarely absent (Sheard 2010: 183).
