Type locality coordinates: 39°28'0? N, 31°13'38?W; 39.466667, -31.227222.

Thallus: fruticose; branches usually more or less terete, or somewhat flattened, with a smooth surface; cortex with palisade plectenchyma; epicortex gel absent; medulla in holdfast white but usually streaked with brown or black; soralia common (sterile morph). Apothecia common, immersed or subimmersed (fertile morph). Spores 21-25 x 6-7 µm (Tehler et al. 2004: 410).

Photobiont: Data lacking.

Chemistry: Thallus and soralia C+ red, branch tips and soralia K+ pinkish/reddish; contains erythrin, lecanoric acid, montagnetol and orsellinic acid (trace) (Tehler et al. 2004: 411).

Ecology: On rocks and cliffs.

Distribution type: Azores, Madeira, Estremadura (Portugal).
