Description: Lichen. Thallus fruticose, stiff, brown to greyish-brown; branches terete, foveate or smooth; cortex hyphae slightly interlaced, anticlinally arranged but not forming a conspicuous palisade plectenchyma; epicortex present as a surface gel; medulla in holdfast white but usually streaked with brown or black; soralia absent. Apothecia present and usually numerous, sessile. Spores 21-27 x 5-6 µm (Tehler et al. 2004: 412).

Photobiont: Data lacking.

Chemistry: Roccanin (Bohmann-Lindgren 1972, Bohmann-Lindgren & Ragnarsson 1972, Huneck & Yoshimura 1996: 129). Thallus C- and K-, cortex C+ red under epicortical layer, disc C+ red; erythrin and lecanoric acid (Tehler et al. 2004: 412).

Ecology: On rocks and cliffs (Tehler et al. 2004: 413).

Distribution type: Macaronesia and the western Atlantic coasts of southern Europe and Africa down to Angola.
